WHY BOTHER WITH MUSIC INSTRUCTION?
The benefits of music instruction have been widely documented. Many studies have shown that
children who take music lessons have higher SAT scores and generally do better academically.
Additionally, music instruction helps children develop higher self-esteem, self-discipline and diligence.
Adults taking music lessons benefit from decreases in anxiety, depression and loneliness; factors that
are critical in coping with stress and in improved overall health. Performing music promotes self-
expression and can provide great pleasure.
PRIVATE GUITAR LESSONS
Taking private guitar lessons can be a good choice for many students. The guitar is a very versatile
instrument offering many approaches and appealing to varied musical interests. Classical guitar allows
the player to perform alone and still provide a complete musical ‘picture’. The repertoire for classical
guitar is not nearly as vast as that for the piano, but there exists a great deal of beautiful solo guitar
music nonetheless. Jazz and rock guitarists perform most frequently in a group context. The
interaction with other musicians can be very stimulating for some students. For those who like to sing,
the guitar makes an excellent accompaniment instrument.
I am very flexible regarding personal musical preferences and make every effort to develop lesson
formats that will develop the student’s ability while maintaining interest. In spite of the guitar’s great
versatility, there are common principles that apply to all styles of music - and all styles of guitar
playing. The importance of developing good practice habits, both physical and mental, cannot be
overstated. Students who wish to learn to play guitar should expect to learn good fundamental
technique, read music and, when appropriate, receive some instruction in basic music theory.
