JAZZ GUITARIST WANTED? - CLASSICAL MUSIC WANTED?
Whether a solo jazz or classical guitarist is wanted, I accept bookings in both genres. As a Berklee College
of Music alumnus and a New England Conservatory graduate (classical guitar performance major), I am well
acquainted with jazz and popular standards (“The American Songbook”) as well as the traditional repertoire
for classical guitar.
ACOUSTIC JAZZ GUITAR - THE AMERICAN SONGBOOK
Acoustic jazz guitar offers a sound that is both uplifting and entertaining. Perfect for family events, corporate
functions, fund raisers and holiday parties, most age groups enjoy jazz. Traditionally, jazz guitarists perform
on an electric (usually archtop) guitar. I use one of these instruments myself when performing with jazz
bands, swing bands and other jazz ensembles. My instrument of choice for solo jazz performance is the
nylon string classical guitar which is not played with a pick, but rather with the fingers of the right hand.
Guitarists who use this approach are often referred to as fingerstyle jazz guitar players.
Performing as a solo fingerstyle jazz guitarist has long been a particular specialty of mine. The collection of
tunes known as “The American Songbook“ comprises a very large portion of my repertoire. These are the
great standards by composers such as Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Ann Ronnell and a
host of others. Many selections from “The American Songbook“ were originally composed for Broadway
shows or for movie soundtracks. Over time, this music has become part of the fabric of our culture and is
the traditional core repertoire for jazz musicians. Widely known and loved across generational lines,
fingerstyle guitar arrangements of "The American Songbook" make great live jazz music for any special
event.
TRADITIONAL CLASSICAL GUITAR MUSIC
No instrument is better suited than classical guitar for creating an intimate, elegant ambiance. In addition to
weddings, many people also prefer to have classical music for receptions, upscale events, fund raisers and
other special occasions.
Classical guitarists perform works ranging from over five centuries. A great deal of Renaissance and
Baroque music, originally composed for the lute and harpsichord, has been successfully transcribed for
classical guitar. During the Classical and Romantic periods the guitar began to develop in it‘s own rite and
much original music was composed for the instrument. As the guitar gained favor during the 20th Century
many Contemporary composers created some very beautiful works for classical guitar.
The repertoire lists below are not nearly complete, but should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect.
Performances can include jazz, classical or little of each.
